The My Computer folder is a component of Microsoft Windows that was first introduced to the general public shortly after the release of Microsoft Windows 95. My Computer has been included in all of Windows programs ever since. The purpose of the My Computer folder is to allow you to browse the contents of your computer as well as to manage your drives, folders, documents and important programs that you may have installed on your machine. The folder also contains links to all of your storage areas, which include removable and non-removable media. Most people use the My Computer and/or Computer folder to access file folders and programs that are stored on their machine. The folder allows easy access to all of the applications that makes your computer work properly. You can also use the folder to learn more information about program files that are stored on your computer. If you are using a version of windows that is older than XP, the My Computer folder will also include links to printer and scanner configurations in addition to connection functions if you are using dial-up to connect to the Internet. If you have upgraded to Microsoft Vista, the My Computer folder and icon has now been modified to just Computer. Despite the name change and relocation of the icon, the Computer folder has the same function and purpose as the My Computer folder in older versions of Microsoft. To open the My Computer Folder, just click on the Windows Desktop and then double click on the My Computer icon. When the My Computer or Computer folder is open, you should always see the drive listing and the Browsing My Computer option if you have Windows 2000. You can manage the My Computer folder by right clicking on the My Computer or Computer icon and then clicking on properties. This will allow you to view all the setting and options that you have available. The My Computer folder contains very important files and should not be deleted or removed. If you do not need or want the icon for My Computer, there are options to make it less visible, even though deleting the icon entirely is not possible at the current time.
